My Journey to CanIRON via the Manitoba Blacksmith Guild

CanIRON XIV - Aug 7-10 in Austin, Manitoba

CanIRON and the Blacksmithing Community

As a blacksmith, my passion extends beyond the forge; it's about building a community, sharing knowledge, and preserving the art of metalworking. Over the years, I've had the privilege of contributing to CanIRON, Canada's premier biennial blacksmithing conference, and I'd like to share that journey with you.

CanIRON VE: Keeping the Flame Alive Virtually

In 2021, the world faced unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Physical gatherings were impossible, but the spirit of blacksmithing endured. We organized CanIRON VE (Virtual Edition), an online event that brought together blacksmiths from across the globe. Through virtual demonstrations, discussions, and workshops, we maintained our connections and continued to learn from one another, proving that the forge's fire burns bright, even in the digital realm. With over 250 attendees at the event, I like to think that this was the largest online blacksmithing conference in history. If not, it was definitely the longest because it ran from Friday to Sunday and some people streamed their blacksmithing well into the night.

Scrap Smithing: A Prelude to CanIRON XIV

In August 2024, we hosted "Scrap Smithing" at the Manitoba Agricultural Museum in Austin, MB—the future site of CanIRON XIV. This event served as both a test run and a celebration of our craft. The museum's expansive grounds, rich with history, provided an ideal backdrop for forging, camaraderie, and inspiration. The success of Scrap Smithing affirmed our choice of venue and set the stage for what promises to be an unforgettable CanIRON XIV.

Reflections on Community and Craft

Organizing events like CanIRON VE has been both challenging and rewarding. It's a labor of love, driven by a desire to give back to the blacksmithing community that has given me so much. These gatherings are more than just educational; they're about forging lasting connections, inspiring creativity, and preserving a timeless craft.

As we all look forward to CanIRON XIV, I invite you to join us in Austin, MB, to celebrate the art of blacksmithing, learn from masters, and be part of a vibrant, supportive community.
